Edwin and I are pretty much obsessed with a little show called How I Met Your Mother, you’ve heard of it because you don’t live under a rock. I am obsessed with furniture, interiors and anything I can turn into a project. Put them together and what do you get? Me scouring the internet for any information I can find on the incredible set design of the show. Turns out, there isn’t much. Pictures of the set itself were impossible to find (if anyone has a resource let me know). I did, however, find a few good stills to call upon for inspiration and I thought I’d share them.
Ted’s apartment has been Ted and Marshall’s apartment, Ted and Marshall and Lilly’s apartment, Ted and Robin’s apartment (if you don’t know who these people are you should get off my blog!…just kidding, but seriously the show is awesome). Though the inhabitants have changed, the general aesthetic has not. Bold, brightly colored and mostly vintage (looking) pieces are scattered across a very classic crafstman canvas of chestnut moldings, camel walls and exposed brick.
Susan Mina Eschelbach, the set designer on HIMYM, said of Ted’s (and Marshall’s) apartment back when the second season was starting, “Marshall and Ted are romantics, unlike their friend Barney. Their possessions reflect their interests in salvaged and recycled goods. Ted, the architect, has an appreciation of the classicism in architecture. His drafting table is old and not entirely practical. Marshall’s desk is perhaps one he inherited from an environmental foundation for which he volunteered.” - source here.
The charm in the apartment’s decor is that everything looks loved, like it ended up in its particular spot because it couldn’t be lived without. The coffee table looks as though it was found at a garage sale or even on the side of the street, who among us wouldn’t have picked that up! My favorite piece is the teal and black side table. Without it, I think the room would be overpoweringly red. It provides a cool break for your eyes as they travel from one side of the room to the next.
The accessories are casual but fit so perfectly. Wool army blanket? I believe so. What I like most about this room is that it is attainable. I could do this, so could you…after a few years of hunting and gathering! If you need it now though, here is a head start…
